As for whom to send a card to – for that I take the advice of a writer named James Mangan, who says those postcards and letters matter a great deal – even if all they say is “Attaboy!"
Arthur Black, Basic Black
Out of all the people I pull and post quotes from, Arthur Black is one I post a lot of. For several reasons, really. I feel empathy toward his sense of self that he is a ludite. I myself feel that way at times. Especially when it comes to books or even writing a note. Writing a note, even if it’s an email or a tweet, can be hard. Especially if it’s directly to someone. Even asks sent on tumblr to people like Neil Gaiman or Gail Simone just to say “I like your stuff, your stuff made me smile” can be hard. Writing down your feelings (I came very close to writing “feels”, see how the various fandoms on this site have affected me) isn’t easy. It isn’t easy when you find someone that made you feel especially good when they have created something that made you feel wonderful. How I’d love to send a postcard to Rick Berman and tell him how Star Trek gave me a hope for the future. How I’d love to send a letter to Anita Sarkisian and let her know that I learn a lot from her videos. Or even to write to a few tumblr users and let them know that sometimes I think of them and wonder how they’re doing.
Maybe someday I’ll start writing post cards.
