In the early nineties, Pizza Hut sponsored “Book It!” to promote reading. For every ten books you read, you get a certificate for a free, one-topping pizza…it turns out there is no greater pleasure than reading for pizza. No longer do you feel guilty about eschewing the “real” world for these fantasy zones. Now you have an unassailable, American motivation; you’re a breadwinner. Literally.

Karen Russell, on reading fantasy novels for pizza, in the New Yorker. (via thebronzemedal)

karen russell is one of my ultimate book boners (AND I DON’T HAVE THAT MANY NOWADAYS), i think book it! really influenced my being-homeschooled tactic of only reading books and never doing any math

Oh man, Book It!  My nerdy book-loving self was always getting myself some free pizza just for doing exactly what I would have done anyway.

I wish they had that for adults, except maybe with beer and sushi and stuff too.  (And pizza, of course.)

How did you prove you read them?

I remember this campaign, but while I did read a lot of books, the closest Pizza Hut was about two or three hours away.  The worst was when I lived in The Pas, Manitoba, and the closest Pizza Hut was in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (named after the prince, not the other thing).
